T-Diaries: Zara Shahjahan

A glimpse into the world of Pakistani powerhouses

October 19, 2014

Tell us why you chose to be a fashion designer?

By degree I am a miniature artist but even as a young girl, I used to design my own clothes. In college, everything I wore was highly appreciated by friends and family. Soon I started making clothes for them. My mother inspired me and pushed me in the right direction!

What makes you stand out from your competitors?

Zara Shahjahan is known for its signature digital prints, florals and the recent ethnic-print bridal collection from PLBW 2014. All our prints are developed in-house by our artists and give us an edge as a brand. We have also ensured that our brand offers something for everyone. There are different segments and product lines, from COCO by Zara Shahjahan (trendy, everyday kurtas) to Zara Shahjahan Cotton Prêt, Lux Prêt, formals and bridals. All of this is what sets us apart.

What inspires you?

I am inspired by art, culture, nature, history and people.

One thing you have that no one else does?

We all are special with our own unique set of qualities.

How has the Pakistani fashion industry changed over the past years?

The Pakistani fashion industry is bigger and better; more organised and currently booming. Our branding and retail have progressed and contributed to the growth of the overall industry.

Looking back over your career, what do you think is your best work?

I think every year, we get bigger and better. The best is yet to come.

You are a working woman with a husband and children. How do you maintain a work-life balance?

Prioritise and manage your time well.

The Superwoman Syndrome is the desire to do everything perfectly, without any time to yourself. What do you have to say about that?

It’s always necessary to manage your time well. Balancing work with family is not easy but we all need to do it, and with time you learn how to.

An idea that changed your life?

Establishing the brand Zara Shahjahan changed my life.

What’s the best way to deal with failure?

Learn from your mistakes and never repeat them.

If you could relive any one day of your life, it would be...?

Each day is special as I learn something new. If I could, I would relive each day and do it all over again.

Who is your favourite designer and why?

I do not have favourites but I look up to brands like Dolce & Gabbana. I like their aesthetics and design philosophy.

Tell us about your experience at the Faisana Studio Diwali Pop-up Show in London?

Faisana was a good experience! We stocked our clothes at their store and a lot of our UK clients got an opportunity to buy them. It’s always good to work with retailers who help us reach out to new markets.

Any advice for aspiring female designers?

Work hard and always be true to yourself.
