KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) issued contempt notices to the deputy commissioner and land deputy director of the Malir District Municipal Corporation (DMC) on Thursday for attempting to dispossess the traders from the cattle market in defiance of the court's stay order.

Justice Sajjad Ali Shah, who headed the bench, issued notices for October 20 when the matter will be taken up again. Advocate Nehal Hashmi said that, on September 19, the bench had directed these authorities to not to take any coercive action against his client. His client was being harassed to pay bribes after having paid the requisite fee to get space in the cattle market in Malir till Eidul Azha.

He alleged that officials working under the Malir deputy commissioner Qazi Jan Muhammad and land deputy director Sohail Yar Khan were still harassing the petitioners and pressurising them to vacate their business place.

The petitioners were threatened to get out within a day or they would be illegally dispossessed, said the lawyer, adding that the DMC officials have also rented out various spaces in the market under the supervision of the deputy commissioner and deputy director. Hashmi said the officials have deliberately and willingly violated the stay order.

The bench issued notices to the respondents for October 20.
