Who do we blame?

The blast on September 25 that targeted SSP Farooq Awan is just another proof of this dismal situation

KARACHI: Despite the ongoing operation in Karachi and the claims that it is being carried out to ensure the security of the people, the reality on ground has proven how unsuccessful it has been. The blast on September 25 that targeted SSP Farooq Awan is just another proof of this dismal situation. Courtesy his bulletproof car and other security arrangements, SSP Awan survived the attack, along with the police escort that provides security to our VIP motorcades. It was the civilians, once again, who lost their lives.

A very close family friend of mine, Abdul Ghafoor, aged 61 years, was returning after his routine evening walk from Sunset Club around 8.30pm when SSP Awan was attacked near the roundabout close to the Gizri graveyard. His car was hit by the blast and he died on the spot. Two other lives were also lost that night. It seems that the custodians of our safety and security do not even consider the suffering that the victims’ families must have gone through. Will we ever have good governance and security of life and property?

On top of that, we see people sitting in a dharna for six weeks, which has caused security risks and has kept hundreds of policemen from fulfilling their duties and taking care of the security of law-abiding citizens of the country. This is a counterproductive action that further weakens the already unstable state.
