KARACHI: The Sindh government is ready to hold the local bodies’ elections, said Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah. “But we want a uniform system for it.” He added that it was the federal government’s responsibility to step up and form a uniform system for all the provinces.

We, he said, can hold the elections in the province given a reasonable notice.

The chief minister while addressing a delegation from the 101 National Management course on Monday at the Sindh Secretariat.

Shah informed the visiting delegation that Sindh was the first province to pass the local government (LG) law and had assured the apex court that they would hold LG elections in the province.

“We completed the delimitation process but someone challenged this in court and this is why the issue is still pending,” he said.

While responding to a question about the performance of the Sindh government after receiving the National Finance Commission award, the CM said that they got the award in 2010 and since then Sindh had faced natural calamities in 2010 and 2011. “A major share of the development fund was used for rescue and relief activities,” he said.

According to Shah, Sindh’s main problem is poverty and the Sindh government was working on policies and projects to minimise unemployment and increase the purchasing power of the people.
