Main accused in Hajj corruption case granted bail

Rao Shakeel to deposit Rs10 million surety bonds, surrender passport

The Supreme Court on Monday granted bail to Rao Shakeel - main accused in the notorious Hajj corruption case, Express News reported.

Shakeel has been in prison for the last four years.

During a hearing today, the apex court ordered the accused to submit surety bonds worth Rs10 million. In addition, Shakeel was ordered to surrender his passport to the court.

With the trial still going on, Shakeel was warned that failure to attend two consecutive hearings would result in cancellation of his bail.

Special prosecutor Chaudhry Azhar told the court that the accused had not been cooperating and only with his cooperation the trial could be completed within this month.

His accomplice in the scandal was also granted bail earlier.
