Under fire: Two policemen killed in encounter

Three militants also killed in a fierce exchange of fire in Jani Khel, Bannu

BANNU:


Two policemen and three militants were killed in a fierce exchange of fire in Jani Khel, Bannu on Thursday. Unidentified militants opened fire on policemen returning from patrol, which prompted retaliatory fire.


The skirmish occurred in Zindi Akbar Khan in the jurisdiction of Huwaid.

A Jani Khel police official said the deceased policemen were identified as head constable Sadiq Zaman, a resident of Shahbaz Kaki, and Moharrar Noor Ali Shah, a resident of Aba Khel.

According to an eyewitness, the policemen and three militants were killed on the spot. The remaining militants managed to take the bodies of their accomplices before fleeing.

A heavy contingent of police rushed to the site after the attack and launched a search operation. No arrests were made till this report was filed.

The policemen were moved to DHQ Bannu for autopsies. The identity of the militants is yet to be ascertained.

The K-P police have been the target of a rash of attacks for the past few days.

Thal police station was ambushed by six militants on September 16. The assailants hurled hand grenades inside the facility and a suicide bomber detonated his vest during crossfire. The police station was attacked when the officials inside were preparing for fajr prayers.

One policeman died in the blast while three were injured, Hangu DPO Anwar Saeed Kundi had said.

In another incident the same day in DI Khan, militants attacked the house of SHO Saifur Rehman in his absence and killed his two brothers.
