LAHORE: The introduction of a uniform merit-based admission policy, transparent selection of teaching and non-teaching staff has resulted in elimination of nepotism and favouritism in the University of the Punjab (PU).

This was stated by PU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran on Sunday.

He said a 30-member admission committee, comprising deans, chairmen, directors, professors and principals of constituent colleges, had been constituted to monitor the 30,000 admissions in the university.

“In case of any irregularity, the chairman of the department concerned will be held responsible,” he said.

He said that his son could not get admission in PU on merit and was studying at a private university. “The entire admission and selection process in the PU is based on merit,” he said.

Giving details of the selection criteria for teachers, he said that 50 per cent marks had been allocated for academic achievements, research, publications and academic experience etc of candidates. “The remaining 50 per cent marks are given for interviews, with 20 marks for subject specialisation, 15 for verbal communication skills, 10 for job aptitude and five for personality,” he said.

The VC said that the criteria also helped candidates assess their own suitability, adding that candidates must secure at least 60 per cent marks for selection. “Special care is taken in choosing the members of the selection board,” he said. “A record number of selection board meetings were convened during the past six years,” he said.

Kamran said that no complaints had been lodged by any candidate against the admission or selection policy of the university so far.

“The PU teachers have authored a record number of books on different topics. They have also contributed research articles in national and international journals,” he said.

He said that no one would be allowed to disrupt the peaceful academic atmosphere in the university.
