Army chief has unflinching faith in democracy, says Shahbaz

Punjab CM thanks Gen Raheel for army’s relief activities in flood-hit areas

LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif on Sunday said army chief Gen Raheel Sharif had “unflinching faith in the continuity of democracy and supremacy of the Constitution.”

“It is a good omen… in the presence of an army chief like Gen Raheel, no conspiracy against the future of democracy in Pakistan, the sanctity of its parliament and its economic stability can succeed,” he said while addressing a gathering of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) workers at the Muslim League House in Lahore.

Noting that the Pakistan Army, under Gen Raheel’s command, was waging a war against terrorism for the survival of the country, Shahbaz reiterated that the entire nation was backing its armed forces in the fight. He lauded servicemen for fighting terrorism with the ‘spirit of the September ’65 war’.

The Punjab chief minister also thanked the COAS for the relief activities being carried out by the army in flood-hit areas.

On the other hand, Shahbaz said the poor people of Pakistan would “never forgive those responsible for the postponement of the Chinese president’s visit to Pakistan.”

Blaming sit-ins in Islamabad for the postponement of the visit, he said  the Chinese president was supposed to lay the foundation stones for power projects which would generate up to 10,400 megawatts.

The chief minister said the government would not have to pay China even a single rupee back for any development projects.
