KARACHI:

The Sindh High Court (SHC) came hard on the Malir SSP Rao Anwar over his failure to ensure presence of his subordinate in a case relating to alleged disappearance of two citizens for the last 18 months.

Justice Ahmed Ali Sheikh, who headed the bench, directed SSP Anwar to produce head constable Khalid by September 16.

The petitioner, Abdullah Jan, said he had arrived in Karachi due to the bad law and order situation in his hometown in Khyber-Pakhtunkhawa. He alleged that policemen assisted by the Rangers had raided houses of his relatives Shair Azam and Naimatullah in Gulzar-e-Hijri on March 3, 2013.

The law enforcers drove away both the men in an armored police carrier No. SP-9768, but their whereabouts are still unknown to their families, the petitioner added.

He apprehended that they are being detained unlawfully by law enforcers and pleaded to the court to direct the LEAs produce them in the court.

In a previous hearing, the judges had directed SSP Malir to ensure presence of Khalid, who was driving the APC in question, but the official was absent on Tuesday.

This irritated the judges, who observed that the concerned SSP was said to be busy in encroaching upon state lands rather than performing the duties assigned to him under the law.

The bench directed SSP Anwar Rao to produce Khalid on September 16. "In case he fails to appear, non-bailable warrants may be issued against him," warned Justice Ahmed Ali M Sheikh.

We have seen how police has been politicized not only in Punjab but in almost all the provinces. So now the driver will be coached and nothing will come out of it. It would not surprise me if they have already been killed and dumped some where. This is the way our democratic governments work in Pakistan.
