LAHORE:

The Health Department has constituted a search committee to look for and to interview candidates for the slot of chairman and dean of Shaikh Zayed Post Graduate Medical Institute, Lahore.

Former chief secretary Pervaiz Masood has been appointed chairman of the committee. Other members of the committee include Adviser to Chief Minister on Health Khawaja Salman Rafique, the health secretary, University of Health Sciences vice chancellor and Professor Amir Aziz.

A senior official of the Health Department told The Express Tribune that the search committee would shortlist the names of five suitable candidates for the position and send them to the medical institute’s selection board.

The board will then send forward names of three candidates to the chief minister who will appoint one of them as the chairman of the institute.

If the chief minister doesn’t like the choice of candidates, the search committee will send him names of other candidates.

As per the criteria announced by the Health Department, the candidate must have at least 15 publications in peer-reviewed journals; three of these publications should be in international journals. The dean will be appointed in BS-22 for three years.

The candidate should hold an MBBS degree [clinical science recognised by the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council] and a PhD [in case of basic sciences and FCPS, MRCP, FRCS and American Board].

The candidate should be or should have been a professor in a medical institute of known scientific and medical repute for not less than three years.

Candidates with a master’s degree or post-graduate higher diploma in public health and/ or health services administration or medical sciences will be given preference.

Professor of Medicine Farrukh Iqbal is currently serving as the acting dean of Shaikh Zayed Post Graduate Medical Institute. The former dean, Professor Zafar Iqbal, retired on June 18.

The official said that the Shaikh Zayed Post Graduate Medical Institute was one of the most prominent medical institutes in the country and the search committee would strictly adhere to merit in selecting candidates for the new dean.

The last date for submission of forms for the slot is September 30.

The process is likely to be completed by end of October, the official said.
