Appointments to be made on merit: Baig

All appointments on vacant positions will be made on merit, said the Acting Governor of G-B.

GILGIT: Gilgit-Baltistan Acting Governor Wazir Baig has said that all appointments on vacant positions will be made on merit. Only the deserving candidates will be given jobs, he said while talking to a delegation of the Peoples Graduate Forum here on Monday.

“Development would not be possible unless meritocracy and transparency is ensured in provision of jobs and contracts,” the governor exhorted, blaming bureaucrats rats whether local or non-local for making appointments in government departments in violation of rules..

Governor Baig also said that despite financial crunch the provincial government was making all out efforts to provide relief to the disaster-hit parts of Gilgit-Baltistan. “We do not have enough resources to run the affairs of the government,” he said.

Baig also said that the government is planning to levy income tax in the region to shore up its resources. The Gilgit-Baltistan Legislative Assembly is legislating a law in this regard and after its approval it will be implemented. However, he claimed that the income tax would not affect the low-income people.

“Only big companies and business will be brought under the tax net”, the governor said.

The present government has been silent about the Kohistan Development Tax which the government of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa charging at the border town of Sost. It is believed that transfer of the tax amount collected through KDT to the GB government can boost the financial status of the government by making sufficient funds available.
