LAHORE: Lahore High Court Chief Justice Khawaja Imtiaz Ahmad on Wednesday constituted a new full bench to hear a petition challenging the functioning of the one-member Model Town inquiry tribunal.

Justice Khalid Mahmood Khan will head the full bench, which will also comprise Justice Anwarul Haq and Justice Abdul Sattar Asghar.

The bench will resume hearings on the petition from July 25.

One Qamar Sohail filed the petition, arguing that the constitution of the tribunal was against the judiciary's honour. He said in the past, several judicial commissions were constituted but their recommendations were never implemented, which raised questions about the independence of the judiciary.

The petitioner further said that the government always requests judicial authorities to constitute commissions and inquiry tribunals, and uses them as a shield to protect their wrongdoings.

He requested the court to restrain the inquiry tribunal from holding proceedings on the Model Town incident.
