KARACHI:

Bahria Town launched its relief operation for the internally displaced persons of the North Waziristan Agency formally the other day, a statement said on Sunday.

The relief effort for the IDPs is far greater than that undertaken for the victims of the 2005 earthquake and the recent famine in Tharparkar, it said.

“Truckloads of relief supplies left for Bannu yesterday and this supply of ration will continue till the IDPs are able to go back to their homes,” Brig (Retd) Tahir Butt, chief of the Bahria Town’s relief operation said, according to the statement.

Bahria Town Chairman Malik Riaz at a press conference held before the onset of Ramazan had appealed to the federal government and provincial government of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and the army to allow access to the IDPs. He had offered taking care of 100,000 displaced persons with complete provision of camps, food, washrooms, sewerage system, field hospitals and schools. He had also offered to build modern villages for these IDPs when they return to North Waziristan.

Bahria Town chief Malik Riaz has given Rs500 million as initial expenses for the relief activities and another Rs450 million for the rehabilitation of the IDPs after the North Waziristan operation.
