HYDERABAD:

A man was killed in front of his wife and sisters in an instance of honour killing in Hyderabad on Sunday evening.

The incident took place in Jinnah Colony of Latifabad Unit 12. The victim, 30-year-old Nabeel Khwaja, was first stabbed and then shot, allegedly by his brothers-in-law who were opposed to his marriage to their sister, 25-year-old Samina Rao, who was also roughed up badly in the attack and was left injured.

According to SHO Qamar Bhatti, Nabeel and Samina were neighbours. They tied the knot in a court marriage four months ago without the consent of the latter's family. Fearing repercussions, they left Hyderabad and spent around three months in Nawabshah. They returned to Hyderabad only when they were assured by the girl's family that they will not be harmed.

On Sunday, Samina's sister-in-law came to her house and asked her to show her their wedding certificate. "When she went to her room to bring the document, her brothers forcefully entered the house," Gul Naz Khwaja, complainant in the FIR and sister of Nabeel, told the police.

According to her, Samina's brothers took Nabeel to a room where he was beaten, stabbed and finally shot. Samina tried to save her husband but was also beaten up, which left her unconscious.

The police have booked Samina's father, uncle and brothers in the FIR. However, SHO Qamar said that none of the suspects could be arrested so far as they have fled the city.
