KARACHI:

Former Karachi City Cricket Association (KCCA) secretary Ejaz Ahmed Farooqi is optimistic about winning the body’s elections which are being held on Friday at the National Stadium of Karachi, under the supervision of the Pakistan Cricket Board.

The KCCA elections have garnered keen interest this time around as senior figure Sirajul Islam Bukhari will not be part of it after ruling the association for more than four decades as secretary and then president.

The top three officials of the association – president, secretary and treasurer – will be elected for a two-year term. The two strong candidates are Farooqi and Nadeem Omar — the owner of local team Omar Associates. Both contenders have named their respective panels.

On Omar’s panel, SM Ishaq will run for secretary and Shah Shafiuddin will contest for the treasurer’s post. Meanwhile, Shafiq Kazmi and Musheer Rabbani are the candidates from Farooqi’s panel for the two posts.

The KCCA has remained without elected leadership for more than one-and-a-half years and now 21 officials from the seven zones of KCCA will cast their votes.

“Out of 21 officials, 17 are on our side which includes officials of zone I, II, III, V and two votes from zone IV are also on our side,” Farooqi told The Express Tribune.

“During my period as secretary to Bukhari, I have tried to make changes which include making the minutes of all the meetings public. My next aim is to make all the financial movement public.

“The suspension of international cricket in Pakistan has also put a stop to the funds that the KCCA used to receive. So now we have to work on self-generating the funds, for which all our actions and events should be funds-motivated.”

On the other hand, Omar revealed his own goals and plans for the KCCA, should he be elected.

“Our main objective will be to run the KCCA as a professional body, not just an association,” said Omar. “Proper infrastructure, proper funding and developing a corporate culture will be on our foremost agenda.”
