KARACHI:

Police officials have managed to arrest three of the four suspects who had escaped from a police lock-up on Tuesday.

The four alleged criminals, Nazeer Ahmed, Younus, Sultan and Imran, had managed to escape from the lock-up of the Ibrahim Hyderi police station on Tuesday night. The suspects had initially been arrested by the Ibrahim Hyderi police on April 19. They were allegedly involved in several cases of robberies, murders and police encounters.

All three suspects were on police remand and were to be produced before the court on Wednesday. They had, however, escaped from the lock-up on Tuesday night under mysterious circumstances.

According to sources in the Ibrahim Hyderi police station, some of the officials had helped the suspects make their escape in exchange for a large sum of money. One of the fugitives was rearrested on Tuesday night by the Ibrahim Hyderi police from the same area. The other two were arrested on Wednesday morning during a raid by the Special Investigation Unit (SIU). The fourth suspect, Nazeer Ahmed, is still on the run.

"The two suspects, Sultan and Imran, were having tea at a café in Chanesar Goth from where they were arrested," SIU chief Farooq Awan told The Express Tribune. "It has yet to be ascertained whether they escaped on their own or if they were helped by the personnel."

Meanwhile, senior police officials have suspended ASI Javed Ahmed and a sepoy, Sardar Ahmed, of the Ibrahim Hyderi police station. Both the personnel were also arrested and an FIR NO. 119/14 was registered against them for negligence on duty.
