Karo kari: Woman strangled to death

Her husband allegedly broke into the house, strangled her to death while she was asleep and fled.

A woman was strangled to death in Sono Pitafi village situated in Dad Leghari, Ghotki district on Sunday morning.

Bai Pitafi, wife of Allah Warayo Pitafi, was living with her parents after an arguement with her husband. On Saturday night, while she was asleep, her husband allegedly broke into the house, strangled her to death and fled. The police took the body to the Mirpur Mathelo hospital for an autopsy.

Bai’s brother Mithal Pitafi claimed that two months ago, Allah Warayo had accused her of being a kari for her involvment with Janan Pitafi and forced her out of his house. According to Mithal, the matter was brought into the notice of an elder of the Pitafi tribe, who imposed a fine of Rs150,000 upon Janan Pitafi, which was paid to Allah Warayo but despite this he refused to accept Bai back into his house. While Mithal alleged that Allah Warayo was responsible for the murder, other sources claim he may have strangled his sister himself in order to implicate his brother-in-law. No case has been registered with the police so far.
