HYDERABAD:

Federal and provincial government departments owe Rs28 billion to the Hyderabad Electric Supply Company (Hesco), said Minister of State for Water and Power Abid Sher Ali.

Addressing a press conference at the Hesco head office on Wednesday, Ali directed the officials to disconnect connections of all government departments which have failed to clear their outstanding dues.

The minister also warned domestic consumers that they will face up to 20 hours daily power shutdown if their areas report a low recovery and high incidence of power theft.

He complained that the police are not helping Hesco to curb electricity theft. Ali claimed that the Hesco staff has reported 748 power theft cases with the police, but only 20 FIRs were registered.

During the press conference HESCO officers complained about MNA Waseem Hussain of MQM for threatening them. “If even a lineman gets hurt in their area, Waseem Hussain will be held responsible,” said Ali.
