LAHORE:

Punjab University (PU) Vice Chancellor Mujahid Kamran said on Tuesday that ignorance could not be removed from society without promoting the reading habit.

He was addressing a seminar organised by the Department of Library and Information Sciences (DLIS) at Al Raazi Hall.

Kamran said the only path to progress for Pakistan was through education. He said many countries spent around 5 per cent of their GDP on education while Pakistan spent only 2 per cent.

DLIS Chairperson Kanwal Amin said it would be wrong to say that people were no longer interested in books because of the internet and electronic media. Chief Librarian Chaudhry Hanif said the PU administration was taking significant steps to promote a culture of reading by organising book fairs.
