GHALLANAI:

An eight-year-old child was seriously injured when an improvised explosive device (IED) blew up in Sagi Bala in Safi, Mohmand Agency.

Hikmatullah was playing in front of his house on Sunday morning when the IED exploded, shared Upper Mohmand Agency Assistant Political Agent (APA) Jamshed Khan.

The injured was in critical condition and was taken to Lady Reading Hospital for treatment.

Khan said the administration started a search operation in the area.

However, no arrests had been made at the time this report was filed.

This is not an unusual occurrence in the agency as security forces have defused hundreds of IEDs since 2011.

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf-led provincial government has launched a Mine Risk Education (MRE) programme across the area, where schoolchildren are taught the dangers of IEDs and how to protect themselves.
