Man-of-the-match Jacques Kallis scored an emphatic 72 to help Kolkata Knight Riders open their Indian Premier League (IPL) account with a massive 41-run win over Mumbai Indians in the opening game of the 2014 season in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday.

Kallis’ valuable 131-run partnership stand alongside Manish Pandey (64) rushed Kolkata to 163 for the loss of five wickets after captain Gautam Gambhir was accounted for by Lasith Malinga for an eight-ball duck.

Malinga was the only bowler who delivered for the defending champions with four wickets.

Set a target of 164, Mumbai were undone by spinner Sunil Narine who took four wickets to match Malinga’s performance. He also became the fastest bowler to bag 50 wickets in the tournament.

Ambati Rayudu (48) and Rohit Sharma (27) were the only players who put up a fight against Kolkata but their contribution went in vain as Mumbai could only muster 122 for seven in their allotted overs.
