GHALLANAI:

The political administration of Upper Mohmand Agency destroyed poppy crops on more than 25,000 square yards of land in Kamali Haleemzai.

Assistant Political Agent Jamshed Khan told journalists that officials and levies forces destroyed poppy fields located at various locations in the agency. He said a campaign has been launched to destroy all the poppy crops in the area, adding despite being provided free seeds and fertilisers by the agency administration to encourage them to cultivate other crops, farmers continue to grow poppy.

Farmers claim the crop is their sole source of income and when officials destroy their fields they are forced to go hungry. They complained the seeds and fertilisers provided by the administration are given to tribal maliks and not farmers, adding some maliks do not even own cultivable land.

Good effort by political administration. Its inhumane to cultivate poppy and sell death to humanity. laws should be made to punish the culprits who cultivate poppy.
