KARACHI: Sabina Faisal clinched the gold medal in the single scull event at the 2014 Spring Rowing Regatta on Sunday organised by the Karachi Boat Club (KBC).
The three-day competition consisting of 30 events began with indoor competitions, featuring 112 girls out of the 142 athletes, who were representing 18 schools from the city.
Meanwhile, Minha Haris secured the silver medal, while Eman Siddiqui finished third in the competition.
On the concluding day, Salma Rabia Arif and Aleena Abid won the doubles scull category leaving Eman and Myra Cowasjee behind in second place.
Myra and Aleena Hussain triumphed in the U14 single scull girls event.
Earlier, Aleena had won the U12 girls 500-metres indoor event on Friday.
In the boys’ competition Hassan Currimbhoy along with Khwaja Suktan Zeb won the men’s doubles scull event.
Shahzad Khan and Abbas Baloch bagged the silver medal, whereas Ghulam Mujtaba and Arwais babai finished third.
Currimbhoy and Zeb also went on to win the men’s quadruple scull along with Khwaja Amin zeb and Asim Iqbal.
At the event’s conclusion, KBC official Abdul Rahim Babai said that the most encouraging feature of the championship was the number of female participants.
“It’s impressive that we had 112 girls out of 142 total athletes,” Babai told The Express Tribune. “Rowing is very popular at school level now and everyone including the male rowers are appreciating the girls.
“This is a good trend given that rowing is such an intense sport. With so many new female athletes, I’m hoping that we’ll have a good chance of winning the medals for Pakistan at the upcoming Association of School Rowing in Asia Championship in Singapore.”
