FAISALABAD: A petition was filed against Sheikh Muhammad Akram of Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N) on Wednesday on the charges of bank default among others, Express News reported.

Akram was an MNA elected last year in NA-89.

The election tribunal brought forward these charges based on suggestions made by Maulana Ahmed Ludhianvi.

As a result, elections in NA-89 have been cancelled and will be rescheduled.

Last year in May, Akram defeated Maulana Muhammad Ahmad Ludhianvi on NA-89 Jhang 4.

Akram, who is the father of former MNA Sheikh Waqas Akram, secured 74,324 votes last year. Akram’s son had earlier withdrawn nomination papers in favour of his father.

Ludhianvi, who is also the chief of Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ), managed to secure 71,598 votes during last year’s elections.

NA-89 has long been an ASWJ hub. In 1988, when it was known as Sipah-i-Sahaba, its founder Haq Nawaz Jhangvi won 39,000 votes at NA-89, but lost out to Begum Abida Hussain.
