KARACHI:

Not a single medical college, except Aga Khan Medical College, fulfills the requirement of the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC), disclosed a former member of the PMDC, Dr Shershah Syed.

"The present [body] PMDC only serves the interests of private medical colleges. This does not only affect doctors but the patients too," said Dr Syed, stressing that the country needed doctors, not 'quacks'.

Addressing a press conference at Karachi Press Club along with members of civil society and the Pakistan Medical Association (PMA), he alleged that several medical colleges had received recognition without fulfilling the criteria of faculty and facilities over the last 10 years.

It was revealed that the number  of students admitted to medical and dental colleges had increased rapidly to make money at the cost of the standards of medical education.
