KARACHI: Extending the earlier 24-hour deadline, the Supreme Court on Friday ordered the Sindh advocate general to appoint a new Inspector General (IG) by March 28, Express News reported.

The apex court issued this order while hearing the Karachi law and order case.

The bench had told the government to fill the post by 11:30am today, however, this deadline was extended by one week.

Advocate General Sindh Fateh Muhammad Malik told the court that names for the IG would be sent to court on March 24.

The court responded that it was not interested in receiving names of people who may fill the post and reiterated that an appointment letter should be submitted to the court by March 28.

Vacant post

The position of the top cop in the province has been vacant for almost a month since former IG Sindh Shahid Nadeem Baloch retired from the post on February 20.

On March 16, the provincial government had locked horns with the federal government over who to appoint as the new IG of the province.

The Sindh government had suggested former Karachi police chief Iqbal Mehmood and former Sindh police chief Fayyaz Leghari for the post but the federal government had said that DIG Farooq Ameen Qureshi and National Highways and Motorway Police Inspector General Zulfiqar Ahmed Cheema are being considered as Baloch’s successors.

According to the 18th Amendment, the federal government cannot appoint any officer for the post of IGP without consulting the provincial government.

@Truther: Zulfiqar Cheema is the weakest and worst of the candidates. His career is littered with corruption and TC of the Sharifs. He must be avoided at all costs. We don't want stooges like him, Muhammad Zubair, and Najam Sethi in all institutions. There must be some end to their greed for money and lust for power.
