PESHAWAR:

Sarband police arrested at least 15 people during a search operation in several villages near the Khyber Agency border on Thursday.

A police official said the search operation was carried out to reassert the power of law enforcement agencies and keep anti-state elements at bay following a recent suicide attack on a police APC on Bara Road near Batatal. According to him, attacks on police have increased over the past month and authorities were doing their best to address the issue. In recent months police have established several new check posts across the city to beef up security in the provincial capital.

“One AK-47, three other rifles, one TT pistol and dozens of cartridges were recovered from the suspects’ possession,” he said.

The search was conducted under the supervision of DSP Hayatabad and police personnel included women and bomb disposal units (BDU).

The suspects caught in possession of firearms were booked while others would be released after questioning.
