LAHORE:

The head of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has directed its Rawalpindi wing to pursue the Modaraba scam cases vigorously and ensure recoveries at the earliest.

NAB chief Qamar Zaman Chaudhry also directed the concerned parties to liaise with other relevant departments and agencies to ensure that punitive action is followed through to a logical conclusion against those guilty of looting the public.

Chaudhry also directed the operations wing to devise a mechanism to focus on sizeable cases instead of draining resources on minor cases.

“I want recoveries to be done at the earliest. Put your efforts together in a professional and impersonal manner to execute these cases,”  said the NAB chief, directing the regional NAB wing to submit a progress report within 10 days for a progress review takes place in the next meeting.

Director general of NAB Rawalpindi Colonel (retd) Subah Sadiq apprised  the chairman about 17 Modaraba and Musharqa scams which are at different stages of investigation/inquiries t NAB Rawalpindi. The chairman was informed that only one out of 17 cases is at the investigation stage, while six are at inquiry level. Another 10 cases are at the stage of ‘complaint verification’. Zaman was informed that so far about 27,208 of those affected have registered their complaints with the anti-graft body, amounting to Rs31.05 billion in 11 cases.

The chairman directed the concerned officer to submit a reference regarding the Modaraba scam in the next executive board meeting (EBM) of the bureau. He also directed NAB Rawalpindi to ensure the early disposal of the cases and observed that progress on the issue is unsatisfactory.

Swindlers have looted billions of rupees from the general public who were trapped by temptation and greed to multiply the profit on money through these fraudulent schemes, he said. He directed the bureau to take action against the accused irrespective of their affiliation and social status.

Lt Col Imtiaz Alam (retd) | 10 years ago | Reply What a pity. My case is lying with NAB since 2009. Inquiry ordered 2011. Ample evidence provided. NAB has also framed a list of charges against the accused. A recent letter sent to the present NAB Chairman has had no effect. It seems that either the accused are too powerful or NAB has compromised.
