US-Pakistan relationship

Letter January 27, 2014
Pakistan does not have much to offer to the relationship and the US cannot offer Pakistan what it wants.

CHICAGO: This is with reference to James F Dobbins’s article of January 27 “A new chapter in US-Pakistan relations”. This is a nice article, full of platitudes, but does not even attempt to gloss over the differences in the relationship between the two countries.

Pakistan does not have much to offer to the relationship and the US cannot offer Pakistan what it wants. Will the relationship last beyond the politics of aid? Shared goals and interests can be built upon but buying loyalty is simply not possible in a transactional relationship.
