KARACHI:

Students of the Institute of Business Administration (IBA) took a break from assignments and test score nightmares by showcasing their mastery in the art of cooking on Saturday.

Inspired by Franc Roddam's worldwide TV phenomenon, MasterChef, seven business administration students organised an in-house culinary competition, titled "IBA MasterChef", at the institution.

Participation in the event was mandatory for students of Integrated Marketing Communication course to give them hands-on experience over branding and marketing skills, explained Osama Masood, one of the organisers.

After month-long efforts, the students managed to engage Shan Foods, Bonanza and Nadec as sponsors for the event.

"Students enrolled at the IBA have much more to offer. They can introduce innovative techniques to enrich their learning experience," said Muhammad Hasan, while explaining the aim behind organising the branding and marketing exercise.

The three finalists - Team Phi, Team Blue Menthol and Team Protegas - gathered at their respective stoves at the IBA's main campus lawn to give their all-out best to cook the oriental dishes of Chicken Manchurian and egg-fried rice.

"Earlier, the IBA students with a passion for cooking formed around 21 teams to compete with each other in the preliminary rounds," explained organisers, Syed Salman Bukhari and Anadil Mohammad. Dressed up in the traditional chef's uniform with toques and double-breasted jackets, five participants on each team made hurried attempts to apply their culinary skills with handiness and dexterity. However, there were those who knew little about cooking but participated for the moral support of their team members. "I have really proficient members in my team, so I believe we will win," remarked Maida Ajmal, a participant.

With the aroma of the prepared dishes in the air, the judges declared Team Phi the winner.

"Student societies at the IBA organise all sorts of events but this idea was essentially different and interesting," said Maryam Mustafa, one of the participants, while explaining her reasons to partake in the competition.
