KARACHI: Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC), in line with its climate change policy, has started a programme that envisages distribution of 2.7 million energy savers free of charge among Karachi’s domestic consumers.

The energy savers, which will be distributed under the Prime Minister’s Energy Saving Programme, will conserve 70% of electricity compared to ordinary bulbs, have a longer life and environment-friendly effects.

The launching ceremony of the energy efficiency programme was held at KESC offices and the guest of honour was renowned writer Fatima Surriya Bajiya, who has received numerous awards of excellence in recognition of her tremendous services.

At the end of the project, the company will save 107 megawatts of electricity across Karachi that will offset the supply and demand gap and reduce carbon footprints on a sustainable basis to protect the environment.

KESC will provide two compact fluorescent lamps (CFL), generally called energy savers, of 23 watts to each domestic consumer, who will be required to hand over two used and working incandescent lamps (ICLs) commonly called yellow bulbs of 40, 60 or 100 watts.

The consumer will also meet the complete requirement mentioned in the CFL receiving voucher printed in monthly electricity bills.

@Shaikh Muneeb: And then a genuine consumer will buy it at a low price from the market. So in the end the bulbs will be used and the aim of reducing electricity consumption will be achieved.

PS: Don't argue on the low price point above. Basic supply and demand dictates that the price will be lower.

As soon as the domestic consumer will be given these bulbs, they will sell it in the local market at low price. Why can't we come up with out of the box solutions to our problems? I would agree with 'Pakistani' that nohing should be distributed for free here, it only raises the expectations of the people with more to follow.
