Former SBP governor appointed Executive Secretary UNESCAP

Akhtar was the first female governor of the SBP.

Former Governor of State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) Shamshad Akhtar has been appointed as the Executive Secretary of United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP).

UN spokesperson's account tweeted that UN Secretary General Ban-Ki Moon had appointed Akhtar as the executive secretary of UNESCAP.



Earlier, she was appointed as Assistant Secretary-General for Economic Development at DESA and took office on July 9, 2012.

Akhtar was the first female governor of the SBP. She served as the governor SBP for three years from January 2, 2006 to January 1, 2009.

She presided over the 2008 rupee meltdown. Even then she was collecting awards from foreigners while at home the situation was going from bad to worse. I guess the foreigners only cared about her gender and not how well she did her job.
