FAISALABAD: A woman who was set on fire by her husband a few days ago died at Allied Hospital, Faisalabad, on Friday night.

Police said the suspect, Ashraf, a resident of Mohalla Usman Ghani, Ghulam Muhammadabad, had an argument with his wife, Zahida Bibi, on Monday. Her uncle, Faryad Raees, told the media on Saturday that Zahida had quarreled with her in-laws that day. “Zahida exchanged harsh words with the family,” he said.

“Later her in-laws provoked Ashraf who, with help from his sister, doused Zahida with kerosene oil and set her on fire.” Raees said Zahida was taken to the hospital by some neighbours. He said Ashraf fled the scene. “She sustained 80 per cent burns to her body and died at the hospital’s intensive care unit on Saturday,” he said. The Ghulam Muhammadabad station house officer said the body of the deceased had been sent to a mortuary. “A police team has been constituted to arrest Ashraf…further action will be taken once we have the postmortem report,” he said.
