KARACHI:
Rauf Akhtar Farooqui has been appointed as the new administrator for the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC), it was announced on Thursday.
Farooqui, a grade-20 officer, informed The Express Tribune that he has taken over the position with immediate effect and is currently meeting the KMC department officials. “It will take one or two days to know the issues we face, after which we will be able to decide our priorities,” he stated.
When questioned about the pending salaries of KMC employees, the newly appointed administrator stated that this issue will be given priority since the city cannot be kept clean without KMC employees receiving their salaries. “Hopefully we will solve the employee’s salary issue immediately.”
Farooqui stated that he will be looking at the completion dates of development projects since ongoing projects cause traffic jams and are an inconvenience to commuters, especially during rush hours. He agreed that corruption is prevalent in various KMC departments and vowed to stamp it out as soon as possible.
KMC media department had issued a statement earlier today that Farooqui met with the heads of various departments and stated that the city’s development will continue as a team. The statement further stated that all available resources will be utilised while efforts will be made to improve KMC. Farooqui has previously held prominent posts, having served as the chief controller for Karachi Building Control Authority and as the general manager for Karachi Port Trust HR department.
