LAHORE:

The government has imposed a ban on pillion riding across the province on 9th and 10th Muharram to avoid any untoward incidents, The Express Tribune has learnt.

The government had previously imposed Section 144 on pillion riding in the province for a month from 1st Muharram.

No exemption would be extended for pillion riding with women, children or elderly people. “People must observe the ban without excuses,” a senior Punjab government official said.

The Home Department has directed the provincial police officer and all regional police officers, the capital city police officer and district police officers to implement the ban in letter and spirit.

According to a notification issued by the Home Department, the ban on pillion riding would be observed without exemption across the province on Thursday and Friday.

Violators would be booked under Section 144 and detained for 72 hours, the official said.

The government has also banned display of arms, distribution of hate content, wall chalking and inflammatory speeches for a month starting Wednesday. Violators would be booked under relevant laws.

Law enforcement agencies have been directed to ensure strict enforcement of the prohibitions.
