ISLAMABAD:

The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) has cautioned students against getting admissions to 22 private medical and dental colleges, which are either not registered with the body or have failed to meet its criteria.

PMDC spokesperson Hina Shahid said the six medical and dental colleges, whose registration had been cancelled temporarily, would resume the process of admissions once they met the criteria. Before rescinding their registration, the six colleges were issued warning letters to overcome the shortcomings, but they failed, she added.

“The recognition and registration of 16 medical and dental colleges will be done once they meet the criteria.” PMDC will publish a list of unregistered medical and dental colleges to forewarn students, she said.

Meanwhile, sources in the PMDC claimed that the present PMDC administration is refusing to recognise some medical and dental colleges as they are owned by council members, who had refused to accept the election conducted by it.

Some of these colleges are being run by council members who refused to accept the PMDC election. To mount pressure on them to accept the election results, the present PMDC administration has included the names of their medical and dental colleges in the list, said sources.

According to documents available with The Express Tribune, the registration of six private medical and dental colleges has recently been cancelled by the PMDC for failing to maintain standards, including shortage of faculty.

The six medical and dental colleges are Pak Red Crescent Medical and Dental College Lahore, Mohiuddin Islamaic Medical College Mirpur Khas, Abbottabad International Medical College Abbottabad, Independent Medical College Faisalabad, Women Medical College Abbottabad and Al Tibri Medical College Karachi.

The remaining 16 colleges have not been recognised at all by the PMDC. These are King Jehanzeb Medical College Swat, Rai Medical College Sargodha, Faryal Dental College Sheikhupura,  National Institute of Medical and Social Sciences (NIMSS) Islamabad, Bakhtawar Amin Medical and Dental College Multan, Gul Naseem Medical College Hyderabad, Sarfaraz Medical and Dental College Rahim Yar Khan, Kolachi Medical and Dental College Karachi, Core Medical College Islamabad, Dental Section Core Medical College Islamabad, Dewan Medical and Dental College Karachi, Rahbar Medical and Dental College Lahore, Rashid Latif Dental College Lahore, Jahangir Medical College Tando Allah Yar, Sindh, Dental Section of Punjab Medical College Faisalabad and DG Khan Medical College, DG Khan.
