LAHORE:

The Lahore High Court has summoned the secretary to Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif for November 8 to respond to former Health Department director general Dr Tanvir Hussain’s petition against his suspension.

“Prima facie, the orders issued by the Punjab CM to suspend the former director general seem to have been ... verbal ... Wishes cannot be allowed in the presence of the Constitution and the law,” Justice Muhammad Khalid Mahmood Khan observed. The judge threatened to jail the secretary if he failed to provide the legal justification for Dr Hussain’s suspension at the next hearing.

The petitioner submitted that an inquiry into deaths by measles had cleared him of the charge of negligence, but the government had suspended him anyway. He asked the court to set aside his suspension and order his reinstatement.
