State of the rule of law

Letter November 06, 2013
To what extent is state providing, through institutions, justice that is effective, accessible, legitimate, trusted.

ISLAMABAD: Rule of law for all citizens is one of the most fundamental public goods, which an effective and legitimate state is expected to provide but one’s head hangs in shame when one reflects on the following important questions:

First, to what extent is our state providing, through its institutions, justice that is effective, accessible, legitimate and trusted by its citizens? Second, which class of persons benefits the most from the operations of state-supported institutions? Is there anyone in the corridors of power and politics in this country who would pay attention to the abovementioned questions and strive to provide the rule of law to all?
