KARACHI: The police, Coast Guard, Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) and customs are involved in drug smuggling Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry stated during a hearing of the Karachi law and order case at Supreme Court Karachi Registry, Express News reported on Wednesday.

“Everyone is a mafia. They are only involved in making money,” he added.

He further stated that no one cares about Karachi and its general public.

The chief justice ordered the Director General (DG) ANF to visit Kala Pul and "see what is going on over there".

He also said, "The DG ANF is not doing his work properly".

“3,000 Coast Guard personnel are present in Karachi but they are unsuccessful in stopping drug smuggling,” the chief justice stated expressing his disappointment.

Chief Justice Chaudhry told the attorney general to ask the relevant personnel whether they want to continue doing their work. He also ordered the ANF to provide a certificate stating no drug smuggling will take place in the future.

When questioned about cleansing Karachi of illegal arms, the attorney general said the security forces had asked people to voluntarily submit their weapons to nearby police stations but now, door-to-door inspection will take place.

The Supreme Court on October 29 had rebuked the federal government for not taking steps to control the smuggling of arms, ammunitions, drugs as well as tax evasions on the imports.

Gulkhaiz | 10 years ago | Reply CJ has ordered that ANF to provide a certificate "stating no drug smuggling will take place in future". It seems quite an unrealistic and ambitious order . Can any drug enforcement agency of the world give such a certificate? By the way • USA has one of the most effective technology based system on ground to control drug smuggling but still billion dollar drug trade is going on in US .In 2008, the US DEA seized the following amounts of drugs within the borders of the United States:Cocaine: 49,823.3 KGsHeroin: 598.6 KGsMarijuana: 660,969.2 KGs,Methamphetamines: 1,540.4 KGsHallucinogens: 9,199,693 individual units etc. I was thinking can USA DEA give such a certificate?
unbelievable | 10 years ago | Reply CJ lacks substance - headline grabbing individual who likes to stir the pot but never seems to change anything. Pakistan would be better off if he actually spent some time and fixed the judiciary system which is so corrupt that it impairs foreign investment.
