FAISALABAD:

Two people were injured in a shootout between some customers and a security guard at the Sabzi Mandi in Saddar on Tuesday.

Several customers later joined shopkeepers in a demonstration and demanded the police arrest the hooligans responsible for the shootout.

Ehtishamul Haq, a vegetable dealer’s guard, got into a scuffle with a customer at the vegetable market.

The matter soon got heated and the customer called up some men. They reached the scene and fired in the air. Haq responded by firing in the air as well.

Other customers and shopkeepers at the market panicked and tried to flee.

Two men Shoaib Akram and Muhammad Mateen sustained injuries and were taken to a hospital. The doctors there later said their condition was out of danger.

The customer and his supporters left quickly. However, most shopkeepers shut down their shops and ran for cover.

They staged a demonstration against the incident later during the day, blocking the Jhang-Faisalabad road for traffic.

A Thikriwala police convoy visited the site and assured the protesters that the culprits would be arrested.

The Thikriwala Station House Officer later said no one had filed a complaint in this regard. He said they would take action on receipt of a formal complaint.
