The city has been divided into 263 union councils in an initial list prepared by a delimitation officer.
There had been 150 union councils in the previous delimitation. The list is based on the 1998 census. It will be open for review by various political parties and civil society activists. Divisional commissioners have been appointed as the delimitation authority for deciding on objections and suggestions with respect to the proposed delimitation.
The district coordination officer has been made the delimitation officer and assistant commissioners assistant delimitation officers. A report will be prepared by October 23 on suggestions and objections received. The delimitation authority will decide on these objections and suggestions by November 2. The final list will be published on November 3 and a notification will be issued by November 4.
The union council will have a chairman and a vice chairman each and six elected members. Two women, a worker and a youth member will also be unelected members the union council.
A non-Muslim member would be included on in every union council having at least 200 non-Muslim voters.
DCO Naseem Sadiq told The Express Tribune that the number of union councils had been increased on account of the growth in population.
He said several other factors were also considered while the list was being prepared. He said the figures drawn from the polio vaccination campaigns and voters’ list had served as two indicators of population growth.
He said three of the union councils under the previous delimitation had a population of over 90,000 people.
He said according to the new scheme, these had been divided into three union councils each.
