Pakistan railways: Freight trains to boost revenue

The initiative will help PR to generate daily revenue worth Rs 20-25 million.

ISLAMABAD: An official of the Pakistan Railways (PR) on Monday said that the feasibility study to link Gwadar deep sea port with existing railways network has been completed. The proposed route of Gwadar-Turbat-Hoshab-Panjgur-Basima-Surab-Mastung is 901 km and Rs180.16 billion project has been submitted to the Planning Commission for approval. He said viability for restoration of Bostan-Zhob track (295 km) and extension of 210 km from Zhob to Kotia Jam via D.I. Khan has also been prepared. According to PR the total length of railways tracks in Balochistan is 1202 km with no new railways track being laid in the province since 2008. PR plans to run around six freight trains per day by the end of 2013. The initiative will help PR to generate daily revenue worth Rs 20-25 million. According to the PR stats, previously only one freight train was operational from Karachi to upcountry compared to three freight trains currently.
