KARACHI: Aisamul Haq Qureshi, Pakistan’s remaining tennis hope in the Commonwealth Games, crashed out of the event, losing 6-4, 7-5 to Australian Matt Ebden in the second round.

Qureshi, who was dumped out of the doubles event with partner Aqeel Khan on Tuesday, fought hard to stay in the tournament but the Australian proved too good for the Pakistan, sealing the win in one hour and 45 minutes. Pakistan captain Mohammad Khalid, despite the defeat, was content with Qureshi’s performance.

“It was a tight match and Qureshi was unfortunate to lose,” Khalid told The Express Tribune. “I’m happy with his performance because he played well despite the lack of practice in singles following a long stint in doubles tournaments. He’s been playing non-stop tennis for a long time and that also makes a difference.”
