ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Monday directed Faisal Saleh Hayat, parliamentary leader of the PML-Q in the National Assembly, to provide documentary evidence of alleged corruption worth billions of rupees in rental power projects (RPPs) on Tuesday.

A three-member bench of the apex court, headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, was hearing a suo motu case about alleged corruption in RPPs.

Justice Chaudhry directed Hayat to submit documentary evidence of alleged corruption in RPPs in the Registrar Office on Tuesday in consultation with a lawyer, saying that the apex court will hear the case on October 6 and 7.

Hayat pleaded before the court that since the Supreme Court took suo motu notice, a shortfall of 5,000 megawatts has started in the electricity supply in the country. “The entire nation is being befooled,” he added.

“You submit documentary evidence in the court and we will look into the matter,” Justice Chaudhry told Hayat.

The PML-Q leader said that he wanted to discuss the issue in parliament but everyone is aware of parliament’s performance for the last two-and-a-half years. “Rental Power Project is the mother of all scams,” he added. Khawaja Tariq Rahim, counsel for the now dissolved Pepco, appeared before the bench and pleaded that the concept of RPPs was not new, as it was introduced in 2006 by then military ruler Pervez Musharraf.

However, the court due to shortage of time could not continue with the hearing of the case and adjourned the case till October 6 with directions to Hayat to submit documentary evidence.
