A man wanted by the Lakki Marwat police in 23 criminal cases was gunned down in an encounter in Wazarki.

Gul Hameed Khan, a senior police official, said they received intelligence information regarding accused Mausam Ali’s whereabouts and raided his hideout in the mountainous area of Wazarki.

Heavy contingents of police along with elite forces reached the area around 11.30am and surrounded Ali’s residence. When the accused realised the police were outside, he opened fire. A shootout followed during which Ali died and his son Shafiullah sustained injuries. Two AK-47s and multiple magazines were seized in the raid.

Ali was wanted by the Essa Khel, DI Khan and Lakki Marwat police for 23 cases of murder, attempted murder, extortion and kidnapping for ransom, among others. The first case against the offender was filed on March 23, 1997. In 2008, the government announced a bounty of Rs50,000 for recovering him dead or alive.

The official added Shafiullah was arrested and shifted to City Headquarters Hospital, while Ali’s body was handed over to the family for burial.
