Balochistan lawmakers discuss flood losses

Balochistan assembly holds debate on flood devastation after unanimously adopting an adjournment motion.

QUETTA: The Balochistan assembly held a debate on flood devastation after unanimously adopting an adjournment motion.

The motion was tabled by Jaffar Mandokhel, a PML-Q lawmaker.

He said that reconstruction  and rehabilitation should be a priority. The adjournment motion called for holding a general debate on the flood situation

He said: “We, the legislators, have to evolve a comprehensive strategy to ensure both.” He suggested that the federal government should coordinate with the provincial government in initiating the rehabilitation process and ensure adequate and transparent distribution of compensation and relief aid among the flood survivors.

After a two-hour debate, the assembly unanimously adopted the adjournment motion.

Recent floods have caused damages amounting to Rs20 billion in Balochistan, Revenue Minister Zamurk Khan Achakzai told the provincial assembly on Thursday.

Achakzai said that a survey is being conducted by 22 teams.

Citing an initial assessment, he said that cultivable land, standing crops, embankments, tube-wells, health and education infrastructure and water supply wetworks in Naseerabad, Jaffarabad, Jhal Magsi and Kachhi districts had sustained severe damages.

The minister said that the revenue department had directed the authorities concerned to finalise the damage assessment in the districts of  by November 22 after which the rehabilitation process would begin.
