ISLAMABAD:

Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani on Thursday met Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to firm up a strategy for crucial talks with US Secretary of State John Kerry later this month.

This was General Kayani’s second meeting with the PML-N chief since his election as the country’s premier.

According to the Prime Minister Office statement, the overall security situation of the country and matters relating to national security came under discussions during the meeting.

However, official sources said the meeting discussed the upcoming visit of Kerry in the fourth week of June.

General Kayani briefed PM Nawaz about the important national security issues, including Pakistan’s role in the Afghan endgame and the controversial US drone campaign.

It is learnt that the country’s security establishment is expected to give a detailed briefing to the new government ahead of Kerry’s visit.

The government, a senior military official said, may in the coming days convene a meeting of the Defence Committee of the Cabinet, the top decision-making body on national security and defence issues.
