KARACHI: The medical community welcomed on Tuesday the implementation of three health ordinances, Sindh Healthcare Commission Ordinance, Sindh Prevention and Control of Thalassemia Ordinance and Sindh Mental Health Ordinance, during a press conference organised by the Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) and Private Hospitals and Clinics Association.

“PMA has been trying to get the Sindh Healthcare Commission Ordinance passed in the assembly since the past 10 years,” said the association’s honorary president, Dr Idrees Adhi. “The ordinance states that a seven-member committee will be formed to improve the quality of healthcare services,” he added. “Fake medicines and quack doctors will also be banned in Sindh.”

He pointed out that the ordinances require all healthcare providers, including hospitals and clinics, to be registered with the health department within 90 days.  “If any patient becomes ill or dies due to being administered poor healthcare services, he or his attendants will have the right to approach the commission and register a case against the service provider.” He also mentioned that the medical report must prove the role of the service provider in the patient’s death or injury.

“The government will also set-up genetic counselling facilities at medical centres in the province.”

A number of eminent officials, including Dr Qaisar Sajjad and Caretaker Health Minister Junaid Ali Shah, were present at the occasion. Dr Sajjad thanked Sindh Governor Ishratul Ebad for promulgating the ordinances. During the question and answer session, a media representative asked the panel why Ebad had decided to approve the health ordinance ordinances now when the provincial assembly was not in session and after having been in power 11 years. “The conditions of healthcare services in the province made it necessary to take immediate action,” said Shah.
