ISLAMABAD:

Federal Minister for Water and Power Dr Musadik Malik has underlined the need for swiftly finalising matters pertaining to alternative energy to pave the way for completing projects without further delay and meet the growing demand for energy in the country.

He made these remarks while presiding over a meeting of the Alternative Energy Development Board (AEDB) here on Wednesday. Secretary, additional secretary, joint secretary (distribution companies) and senior AEDB officials were present during the deliberations.

Malik stressed that bridging the gap between demand and supply of energy and cheaper generation were top priorities of the government, which was taking various steps in that respect.

“We should make such policies that provide a level playing field to investors to attract them in all sub-sectors of the power sector,” he said, highlighting the ‘very important’ role of the regulator in determining tariff for the investors.

He asked AEDB to complete the process for alternative energy projects and provide the investors a one-window facility.

He claimed that in the last one month 2,700 megawatts of electricity had been added to the system by making fuel and gas arrangements.

Earlier, AEDB officers told the meeting that 256MW wind power projects would be completed by September 2014. One project of 50MW has started producing power while another of 56MW will start generation in July this year.

Apart from this, upfront tariff has been set for bagasse-based projects under the new co-generation policy approved by the government.

Nepra officers gave a detailed briefing on the upfront tariff recently announced for fast-track wind power projects.

National Transmission and Dispatch Company will make a presentation shortly on the planning for setting up grid stations and laying transmission lines for improving the system and to connect the wind power projects to the national grid.
