KARACHI:

Vision Foundation has established a first-of-its-kind Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP) Centre in Pakistan with the co-operation of Support Trust, an NGO.

RP is an inherited eye disease that causes severe vision impairment that often leads to blindness. According to a study, one in every 3,700 person suffers from this incurable disease.

Vision Foundation was founded by Akram Lodhi, an engineer who lost his eyesight to RP. It began with night blindness, which converted into the incurable RP.

Sindh National Accountability Bureau director-general Wajid Durrani inaugurated the centre and termed it a ray of hope for people suffering from this debilitating disease. He expressed hope that philanthropists, researchers, surgeons and public and private organisations will come forward to support this project.

Sindh Finance Minister Shabbar Zaidi said that his government would provide all possible support to the RP Centre in its research for treatment of this disease to eliminate blindness and provide care for those suffering from it.

On this occasion, Former MNA Kishwar Zehra said that Support Trust is involved in extending help to needy people in every possible way and said that it wanted representation for the special people in the assemblies to allow them to raise their voice and fight for themselves. Akram Lodhi, Dr Shamoon, Ayesha Baber and Dr Haris also spoke at the event.
